Until 2000, he was Professor at the Computer Science Department at the University of Ulm, Germany. Until 1996, he was head of the Distributed Multimedia Systems Research Division (DIMSYS) at GMD-IPSI, Darmstadt, Germany, and directed many research projects and industrial collaborations in the fields of object-oriented database technology, multimedia information systems, interoperable database systems, and cooperative systems. In 1991/1992, Dr. Klas was a visiting fellow at the International Computer Science Institute (ICSI) at the University of California at Berkeley, CA, USA. His research interests are currently in multimedia information systems and Internet-based applications. He currently serves on the editorial board of ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Applications, ACM, USA, and from 1998 until 2005 on the editorial board of the Very Large Data Bases Journal.
